Seshego police confirm attempted murder after soldier burned with hot oil

WARNING: Photos not for sensitive viewers. Police confirm an attempted murder case in Seshego after a soldier was burned with hot oil.

POLOKWANE – On Tuesday morning, Seshego Police Station commander Brig Shibomba Shirinda confirmed that a case of attempted murder had been opened after a 38-year-old soldier was splashed in the face and body with hot cooking oil last Thursday.

Shirinda said the case was only registered on Monday evening following several days of hesitation from the victim, who feared that reporting the matter might jeopardise his temporary employment.

The delay also followed threats from the 28-year-old suspect, who reportedly intended to open an assault case against the man, based on previous incidents between the couple.

According to police and Limpopo Social Development officials, the couple had been involved in an argument, and the woman claimed she acted in retaliation after the man assaulted her.

Both initially opted to apply for protection orders, according to a source.

The police have refuted claims circulating on social media that assistance had not been rendered.

According to a police statement, “SAPS 508A forms were fully completed and recorded in the SAPS 508B Domestic Violence Register as required for protection orders.”

The statement further explained that, after the viral posts, police leadership traced the victim with the help of a social worker.

The man reportedly confirmed to both parties that he did not wish for any case to be opened, and that messages on social media had been posted by a family member without his consent.

Police said both parties would face arrest, with the woman expected to be in custody first.

Her initial appearance in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court would depend on the investigating officer’s administrative readiness, police spokesperson Ali Maluleke told BONUS.
