Stalled multimillion-rand Polokwane projects draw EFF scrutiny

The EFF is demanding clarity from the Polokwane Municipality over stalled multimillion-rand projects, including the Sand River bridge and softball stadium.

POLOKWANE – The EFF is intensifying calls for clarity from the Polokwane Municipality over two major projects that remain incomplete.

The party, led by provincial chairperson Lawrence Mapoulo, conducted oversight visits last week to the unfinished Sand River bridge along Nelson Mandela Drive and the softball stadium in the Peter Mokaba sports precinct.

During the inspections, Mapoulo raised concerns and directed questions at Mayor John Mpe and municipal manager Thuso Nemugumoni. The bridge was budgeted at R55m and the stadium at R184m in municipal funds.

In March 2023, municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala confirmed that the bridge extension had been stalled by a dispute between engineering consultants and the contractor, affecting peak-time traffic into and out of Seshego township.

Selala did not respond to BONUS’ enquiry on whether work would resume this week.

Mapoulo raised suspicions that possible corruption may be contributing to the delays.

Earlier, in 2024, the Freedom Front Plus wrote to Nemugumoni saying that the dispute over the bridge involved the municipality and contractor after incorrectly sized support beams were ordered, with neither party accepting responsibility.

“Support beams were manufactured and delivered according to the plans drawn up by the engineer, but the correct length was never verified,” the letter stated.

At the stadium, Mapoulo noted that construction, which started five years ago, has progressed slowly.

The Sand River bridge is incomplete along Nelson Mandela Drive and the EFF demands answers from the municipality.

The previous contractor was reportedly removed, and the completion date has been repeatedly postponed – from an initial 2022 target to now 2027.

“Our members in council will emphasise the need for revised operations and a clear completion plan to ensure the project benefits the surrounding community as soon as possible and meets the highest quality standards,” Mapoulo remarked.
