Motorists urged to prioritise safety on Limpopo roads
With busy roads expected in Limpopo this festive season, motorists are urged to prioritise safety with law enforcement set to intensify road checks.
POLOKWANE – As the festive season approaches and families prepare for reunions and long-distance travel, Limpopo’s roads are expected to become significantly busier.
The Department of Transport and Community Safety has urged all motorists to remain alert, act responsibly and prioritise safety above everything else during this high-risk period.
MEC for Transport and Community Safety Violet Mathye called on drivers to exercise caution and take full responsibility behind the wheel.
She emphasised that the festive season should remain a time of celebration, not tragedy.
“We urge all road users to prioritise road safety and make responsible choices. Let us work together to build a culture of responsible driving and ensure that our roads are safe for everyone,” said Mathye.
She added that the department will continue working closely with law enforcement to maintain visibility, enforce compliance and promote safer roads across the province.
This includes regular stop-and-search operations, routine vehicle inspections and strict action against motorists caught driving under the influence, speeding or using the road without a valid licence.
Taxi industry backs safety efforts
Limpopo’s taxi drivers have once again launched their annual Ndlelantle Initiative, a road-safety awareness campaign encouraging all road users, especially public transport operators, to prioritise safe and responsible behaviour on the road.
A taxi driver from the Mankweng Taxi Association said the campaign serves as a reminder of their responsibility:
“As taxi operators, we transport thousands of passengers every day. Their safety is our priority.”
Mathye commended the initiative, noting that strong partnerships between the government, taxi associations and communities are essential in reducing crashes and saving lives.
Festive road safety tips
The Ndlelantle Initiative and the Transport Department issued the following safety guidelines:
-
Check your vehicle: Make sure your tyres, brakes, lights and indicators are in good working condition.
-
Rest before travelling: Avoid driving long distances when fatigued.
-
Obey speed limits: Stick to regulated speeds at all times.
-
Do not drink and drive: Always choose to be a sober driver.
-
Wear seatbelts: Ensure that all passengers are buckled up.
-
Avoid distractions: Stay off your cellphone while driving.
-
Respect pedestrians: Be mindful when sharing the road.
-
Be patient: Expect increased traffic volumes and possible delays.
With cooperation from the public and continued efforts from transport authorities, Limpopo hopes to ensure that every trip ends safely this festive season.
