How the Trading Places Market is helping Limpopo creatives thrive

Learn how the Trading Places market is empowering Limpopo entrepreneurs through exhibitions, festive shopping and business exposure.

POLOKWANE – Founded by artist Mahlatse ‘Vokal’ Matji and entrepreneur Tshepo Mathabatha, the Trading Places market and exhibition has become a platform committed to showcasing local talent, creativity and enterprise. The duo launched the initiative in August and plan to expand it through the festive season to give more small businesses a space to shine.
Mathabatha told Polokwane Observer that the purpose of the market is to offer visibility to anyone with a product or service to share.

“This market is for everyone who wants to market, sell and make their brand known. We call out the young, the old and anyone interested in joining the market. We want to grow Limpopo, grow businesses and make people aware of each other’s talents and skills.”

Vokal explained that the idea behind Trading Places was driven by a need to contribute to the province’s economic growth.

“We felt it was important to establish Trading Places so the province can grow. Markets and exhibitions boost local economies through increased visitor numbers and sales, while also giving consumers a convenient, festive shopping experience.”

Beyond sales and exposure, Vokal believes the initiative builds a vibrant creative culture.

“The Trading Places market and exhibition offers a unique opportunity to increase brand awareness, generate sales leads and interact with customers in a dynamic environment. These events enhance a city’s cultural and tourist appeal, making it a more attractive destination during the festive season.”

The most recent Trading Places market took place in August at Library Gardens, drawing a mix of visitors, creators and emerging entrepreneurs. The team says details for the next festive edition will be announced soon.

Anne Mametja

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
