Looking for a date idea? Try couples pottery in Polokwane

The Mustard Pot Clay Café shares why pottery is a perfect date idea for couples looking to reconnect this festive season.

POLOKWANE – For many couples, the festive season and long summer weekends offer a chance to slow down, reconnect and spend quality time together. According to Michelle Mostert from Mustard Pot Clay Café, located opposite Mall of the North, pottery is becoming one of the most popular and meaningful activities for couples who want to keep the spark alive.

Mostert hosts a variety of classes for children, adults, schools and couples, and says pottery offers something unique that traditional date nights often don’t. “Pottery classes give couples a fun, romantic and refreshing date experience,” she told Polokwane Observer.

“You can choose to work on collaborative or individual projects, whether you are learning pottery on the wheel or doing hand-building.”

She explains that pottery is far more than just crafting an item with clay.

“I always tell my clients that pottery classes offer couples a fun and engaging way to strengthen their relationship by fostering creativity, improving communication and teamwork, and providing a shared, stress-relieving experience. And it’s effortless if the instructions are followed during the class.”

Mostert adds that stepping away from everyday distractions is one of the biggest benefits.

“The activity encourages genuine quality time, creates lasting memories and gives partners the chance to see each other in a new light. You get to laugh together, support each other and celebrate both the perfect pieces and the imperfect ones.”

Different pottery experiences for couples

Mostert offers three main types of couples’ pottery sessions, each with its own charm:

1. Traditional couples’ pottery class

This session is designed specifically for two people and focuses on collaborative projects or matching items. It’s ideal for couples who want to work together on something special.

2. Couples pottery on the wheel

A hands-on experience where couples learn wheel-throwing techniques such as centering, pulling and shaping clay. It’s interactive, playful and gives partners the chance to try something completely new.

3. Hand-building workshop

A relaxed class where couples create pottery pieces using hand-building methods. It’s perfect for beginners and for couples who want to enjoy something creative without the pressure of mastering the wheel.

Mostert encourages couples to give it a try: “Come and join the fun with your loved one. Come and experience a different kind of date and discover how creativity can bring you closer.”

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
