Polokwane’s Phillart dreams of global gallery and Nelson Makamo collab
Phillart, who began sketching at 12, discusses his career, his work at the Polokwane Art Museum, and his goal to collaborate with Nelson Makamo.
POLOKWANE – From Gr 6, Phillimon Ratladi, better known by his artistic name “Phillart” knew that creativity was his calling.
Ratladi’s journey began in 2013 when he was just 12 years old, armed with a pencil, paper, and a desire to bring his imagination to life. Simple sketches have since evolved into a passion and career that continue to shape his life and dreams.
“I drew my inspiration from my dad; I had that undying spirit of being able to do it like him,” Ratladi says.
Watching his father work sparked a fire that continues to drive his artistry a decade later.

Ratladi initially worked alone, experimenting and learning through trial and error. “I started off alone but made some friends along the way years later,” he explains.
His talent has evolved over the years, culminating in his work finding a home at the Polokwane Art Museum. This milestone, however, marks just the beginning of what he hopes will be a long and fulfilling career.
Phillart dreams of owning his own art gallery, a space where he can showcase his pieces and those of other emerging artists.
His ambitions stretch globally; he hopes to travel the world, explore diverse cultures, and collaborate with renowned artists.
“I’m also looking forward to collaborating with big artists like Nelson Makamo,” he adds.
“I also have so much to show off, so people can watch the space.”
