Easy and neat school hairstyles for kids starting school in 2026

Polokwane hairstylist Mary Moremi shares simple, neat and practical back-to-school hairstyles for boys and girls starting school for the first time.

POLOKWANE – As the new school year approaches, parents of first-time learners are already preparing uniforms, stationery and lunchboxes. But one detail many often forget is choosing a neat, practical hairstyle that will last through busy school days.

Hairstylist Mary Moremi from Penina Park says the right hairstyle can help children feel confident, comfortable and classroom-ready.

With 15 years of experience in the hair industry, Moremi says she understands what works best for young learners, even though schools may have different codes of conduct.

“I’m not an expert on what each school prefers, but I know the basic styles that are suitable for school, especially for first-time schoolgoers,” she told the Polokwane Observer.

Recommended hairstyles for boys

1. Brush haircut

A short, clean and easy-to-maintain style that suits almost every boy.

2. Low taper fade

A neat fade that stays fresh for days and requires minimal styling.

3. Clean shave (bald cut)

For children who prefer no maintenance at all, this is the simplest option.

Moremi notes that boys’ hairstyles are generally quicker and easier to manage, making them stress-free for parents during the school rush.

Recommended hairstyles for girls

1. Classic ponytail

A simple, fast and neat hairstyle that keeps hair away from the face.

Parents can use a matching scrunchie or ribbon for extra flair.

Wrapping a small piece of hair around the tie also creates a polished finish.

2. Pigtail braids

Cute, fun and perfect for keeping hair tidy.

Divide the hair into two equal sections, braid both and secure with elastic bands.

3. Plaited braids, cornrows or straight-up styles

These protective styles keep hair neat for longer and are ideal for energetic little ones.

If the braids are loose, Moremi advises tying them up or down so they don’t fall into the face.

4. Pixie cut

A low-maintenance, stylish short cut for girls who want a no-fuss look.

Perfect for busy mornings and very easy to wash and dry.

5. Top bun

A neat style that keeps hair off the neck.

Gather the hair into a high ponytail, twist into a bun and secure with pins or an elastic. A donut bun ring can help achieve a perfectly round shape.

Moremi’s final advice for parents

“Whether you’re a girl or a boy, there are so many cool, easy and practical back-to-school hairstyles to choose from,” she said.

“If you’re struggling to style your child’s hair, visit a local hairstylist a day or two before school starts. And always remember to check the school’s rules to avoid hairstyles that aren’t allowed.”

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
