Neat, stylish back-to-school hairstyles for high school learners
High school learners are choosing stylish yet school-friendly hairstyles for the new year. Here are the top trends and what local stylists are recommending.
POLOKWANE – As schools reopen for the new academic year, high school learners are flocking to local salons and barbershops to ensure they start 2026 looking sharp, while still respecting school grooming rules.
While personal expression remains important, most schools maintain hair policies that promote neat, manageable and distraction-free hairstyles.
In recent years, many have relaxed these rules to allow protective styles such as long braids, provided they are tidy, not excessively long and in natural hair colours.
The shift has given learners room to look stylish without compromising a professional school appearance.
For girls, cornrows, short braids and twists remain the favourites. Hairstylists say these styles are neat, easy to maintain and last for several weeks.

Ponytails and natural afros also continue to be popular for their clean and confident look.
For boys, brush cuts and simple fades are the preferred choices.

These styles are easy to maintain, neat and comply with most school policies. Many boys add subtle razor lines for a touch of personality, without drawing unnecessary attention.
Local hairstylist Monene Maponya, who runs a salon in the Mankweng Complex, says most learners choose protective hairstyles when preparing for school.
“Young clients want something that looks good but won’t get them into trouble. Cornrows are the top choice because they protect the hair and last longer,” she said.
Barber Tshepang Monyela agrees, adding that neatness matters.
“Learners often ask for trending fades. We keep them clean and not over the top so they don’t run into issues at school,” he explained.
As learners prepare to return to class, their balanced hairstyle choices show that looking good and following the rules can go hand in hand.
