Bus intercepted and impounded for overloading on N1

A bus from Zimbabwe was stopped and impounded near Pepperboom, carrying 90 passengers and operating without a permit or licence.

POLOKWANE – MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, has expressed “deep concern” over the continued lawlessness of cross-border buses, following the interception of an overloaded Zimbabwean bus near Pepperboom on the N1.

The bus, intercepted on Saturday (January 10), was carrying 90 passengers, 19 more than its certified capacity of 71.

It was also found to be operating without a required cross-border permit or a valid operating licence.

The vehicle has been discontinued and is being held at the Polokwane Traffic Control Centre. Arrangements are being made to secure alternative transport for the passengers.

“The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety will not tolerate lawlessness on our roads. We urge all operators to respect our laws and prioritise passenger safety,” MEC Mathye said in a statement.
