Mopani and Letaba camps in Kruger Park not evacuated

After a post circulating on social media, Kruger National Park clarifies that only some riverside chalets were moved to higher ground, not full evacuations.

LIMPOPO – The Kruger National Park (KNP), says that posts doing rounds on social media that Letaba and Mopani camps have been evacuated are not true.

According to KNP General Manager in Communication and Marketing, Reynold Thakhuli, they have only moved guests in Letaba Camp who were booked in chalets facing the river to higher ground chalets.

On Monday, SANParks released a statement indicating that they have closed down Mopani Restaurant as a precautionary measure. The statement also stated that Crocodile Bridge Gate is being monitored and will only be closed as the Crocodile River bridge gets flooded.

The post circulating on social media.

Pafuri Gate remains closed due to flooding and unsafe conditions, while Punda Maria Gate is also closed, meaning the only access to the northern region of the park is via Phalaborwa Gate.

All roads leading from Lower Sabie to Skukuza and Satara are closed. SANParks urges guests to adhere strictly to all road closures, no-entry signs, and instructions from Park officials.

Under no circumstances should barricades, logs or safety barriers be removed, as these are placed to prevent access to flooded or structurally compromised areas.

SANParks spokesperson JP Louw says that the safety of guests, staff and surrounding communities remains their highest priority.
