Two men arrested with R150k worth of chrome in Lebowakgomo

Police intercepted a truck and side tippers loaded with chrome and arrested two men who could not produce legal documentation.

LIMPOPO – Two men have been arrested for the illegal possession and transportation of suspected stolen chrome worth an estimated R150 000.

The suspects, aged 36 and 42, were apprehended on Sunday night (January 11) after Lebowakgomo police, acting on a tip-off, intercepted a white horse-and-trailer truck along the R579 near Mogodi village.

The truck, reportedly travelling towards Gauteng, was located along with two accompanying red side tippers.

Upon stopping the vehicle, police searched it with the occupants’ consent and discovered the side tippers loaded with chrome. The driver and passenger could not produce any legal documentation to possess or transport the precious metals and were immediately arrested.

The truck and side tippers, valued at R1.2 million, were also impounded.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed the suspects are expected to appear before the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court today (January 13) to face a charge of possession and transportation of suspected stolen precious metals. Investigations are continuing.
