Suspect fatally shot, officer stabbed in Makhado arrest

A murder case is under investigation after a suspect was shot dead during an arrest in Makhado, during which a police officer was also stabbed.

LIMPOPO – Police in Makhado are investigating a murder case after a suspect was fatally shot during his arrest on Friday morning (January 16) in Joubert Street.

Routine stop leads to a violent confrontation

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says officers were conducting routine crime prevention duties when they approached a suspicious man.

As an officer attempted to search him, the suspect pulled out a knife and advanced towards the police member.

Suspect flees and is apprehended

The suspect broke free and fled. Police gave chase and called for backup.

A K9 unit member responded swiftly, leading to the suspect’s apprehension.

A stabbing and fatal shooting during arrest

During the arrest, the suspect reportedly grabbed an empty bottle and severely stabbed one of the officers.

Police fired warning shots, during which the suspect was shot and fell to the ground.

Emergency medical personnel were summoned to the scene and certified the suspect dead. The injured police officer was transported to hospital for treatment.

Case opened and referred for investigation

The identity of the deceased suspect is currently unknown.

A case of murder and attempted murder has been opened for investigation. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified and will handle the matter further.
