Makhado girl (10) dies on her birthday after being struck by rocks
A Makhado family blames contractor and municipal negligence after their daughter was killed by a stone while playing on her birthday.
LIMPOPO – A family’s joy turned to heartbreak on Thursday (January 15), when the 10-year-old Mpho Mabudu, a Gr 5 learner from Midoroni, died on the day she was celebrating her birthday.
Mpho was playing on a heap of stones with friends when she slipped and a rolling stone struck her, causing fatal injuries.
What should have been a day of celebration and laughter instead ended in grief for her family and the wider community.
Her family believes the accident was preventable. The stones had been left near the road during recent construction, and they say negligence on the part of the contractor and the Makhado Municipality contributed to the tragedy.
“This would not have happened had the stones been collected. We are grieving and want answers and accountability,” said family spokesperson Ralph Mabudu.
The incident has left residents shocked. A local community leader, who spoke anonymously, said the circumstances surrounding Mpho’s death raised concerns and prompted questions about safety in the area.

Vhembe police spokesperson Warrant Officer Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that an inquest has been opened and he urged parents to ensure children avoid playing near roads, streams and rivers without supervision.
Midoroni traditional leader Vhakoma Vho-Kedibone Foromo extended condolences to the family and warned children to avoid playing near hazardous areas.
He added that the community plans to engage with the municipality to have the leftover construction stones removed to prevent further accidents.
Mpho Mabudu’s funeral will be held on Saturday at Midoroni, with the service starting at 06:00.
