Maake police probe murder after mob justice killing

A man accused of cable theft died in hospital after a mob assault in Maake, prompting strong condemnation of vigilantism from police.

LIMPOPO – Maake police are investigating a murder following a mob justice incident in Lefara Village on Tuesday afternoon (January 20).

Man assaulted over theft allegations

Police were called to the village around 13:00, where they found community members gathered around a seriously injured man lying on the ground.

According to information received, police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the victim, a Zimbabwean national residing in Bridgeway Village, was assaulted by community members who accused him of stealing electric cables.

Victim succumbs to his injuries

An ambulance was summoned, and the injured man was transported to a local hospital for treatment, where police were able to speak with him.

However, he later succumbed to his injuries that same evening.

Police condemn vigilantism

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe strongly condemned acts of mob justice.

“Taking the law into one’s own hands is a serious criminal offence and undermines the rule of law,” says Hadebe.

She urged community members to report suspected criminal activities to the police and allow lawful processes to take their course.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the investigating officer, Constable Madibeng Mahlo, on 082 319 9742. Information can also be provided at the nearest police station, via Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or anonymously using the MySAPS App.

Police investigations are ongoing.
