Taxila teacher wins top business studies award

Taxila teacher Kgadima Mashalane is honoured as the best public school business studies teacher after his learners achieved great results.

POLOKWANE – Business studies teacher at Taxila Secondary School, Kgadima Mashalane, has been teaching the subject at the school since 2011, and his work has been recognised recently.

He won the award for best performing teacher in gateway and selected subjects, particularly business studies, under the public schools category.

Mashalane received the award during the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) announcement and awards ceremony held last Tuesday at The Ranch Resort, hosted by the Department of Education. He was also recognised at the Mayor’s Excellence Awards last Friday at Jack Botes Hall, alongside other teachers who were awarded in their respective subjects. The prestigious events celebrated excellence, discipline and outstanding achievement.

Speaking to Review, Mashalane said he ensured that his learners performed at their best throughout the year. As a result, 53 learners in his class achieved 70% and above.

“It feels overwhelming to win this award because the learners did very well and made me proud. Although it was a very challenging year, the results proved their hard work. My heart is full,” he said.

Mashalane said that such results do not come easily, but require hard work, perseverance, consistency, dedication and support from all the teachers who motivated and guided the learners throughout.

He thanked the Class of 2025 and wished them well for the future. “I especially appreciate the learners who achieved level seven results, and if it was not for all my learners, I would not have received this award. Everyone’s efforts counted and contributed to this achievement,” he said.

He also thanked principal Tlou Ramara for his leadership, the Polokwane Municipality and the Department of Education for recognising their hard work and dedication.

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
