Thohoyandou woman builds successful kota business

A Vhembe woman is turning her passion for local food into a thriving business, serving kotas and other fast food items.

LIMPOPO – Driven by her determination to put food on the table, Takalani Ravele (32) has not only built a successful business but also created a hotspot for local food.

Well-known for her delicious meals from Makwarela near Thohoyandou in the Vhembe district, Ravele is making a decent living from this passion of hers. After losing her job several years ago as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown, Ravele knew she had to find a way to make ends meet. That was when she founded a fast food and catering business.

The journey has not always been easy, but she persevered and continues to work hard.
Ravele holds a B Com economics degree from the University of Venda, an advanced certificate in education (ACE) , and B.Com honours in business management from the University of South Africa.

“When I lost my job, I found myself craving a good kota and chips, but could not find any that satisfied me, so I decided to sell my own.

‘‘Vhasidzana Enterprise is a fast food and catering business serving unique kotas, chips, pizzas and cake. Our kotas have a secret ingredient sauce that sets us apart.

”My goal is to grow the business, expand to new areas, and create jobs for young people,” said Ravele.

Like in every business, she too has experienced challenges.

“Competition from cheaper alternatives and seasonal fluctuations, like when the college students are on recess, are things that affect my business. My secret is to not argue with customers, and to serve great food.

”Running this business has taught me operations, client relations, problem-solving and adaptability. My wish is to get food trailers to sell at different spots in the townships,” she said.
