Limpopo learner suspended after stabbing fellow pupil
A Gr 10 learner from Swobani High School in Madabani has been suspended after stabbing a 14-year-old Gr 8 learner during an argument.
LIMPOPO – The School Governing Body (SGB) of Swobani High School in Madabani has suspended a learner following a stabbing involving a 14-year-old Gr 8 learner.
The incident occurred on March 6, when an argument between learners reportedly escalated into violence. The Gr 10 reportedly stabbed the younger learner with a sharp object.
The Gr 8 learner sustained a serious wound and was rushed to a nearby clinic, but is now reported to be in stable condition.
Last Tuesday, both learners and their parents attended a meeting with the SGB and the perpetrator was suspended for a week pending a disciplinary hearing before the school’s committee.
An SGB member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said schools should be safe spaces for learning and growth, not places for violence.
“Learners must understand that violence has life-altering consequences,” the member said.
The source also raised concerns about some boys who, after attending traditional initiation schools, return to their communities believing they are now “men” and can act without consequences.
“Their behaviour is causing problems that are now spilling into the school environment,” the member said.
The victim’s mother, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed shock. “When my son left for school, I believed he was safe. I never imagined he could be attacked by a fellow learner. I am grateful he is alive, but I want action against the attacker. This child nearly killed my son,” she said.
Education spokesperson Mike Maringa condemned the incident. “The department is awaiting a full report from the school and the circuit manager,” he said, urging parents, teachers, and stakeholders to ensure schools remain safe.
Vhembe police spokesperson Captain Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that no case has yet been opened regarding the incident, noting that both learners are minors.
