Polokwane mom donates kidney to save daughter
A Seshego mother donates a kidney to her 11-year-old daughter, who was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2024 after years of chronic illness.
POLOKWANE – A mother’s love and sacrifice have given an 11-year-old girl a second chance at life after she received a life-saving kidney transplant from her mother.
Kidney failure diagnosis in 2024
Desiree Leopeng recently donated a kidney to her daughter, Ofentse, who was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2024.
Ofentse, the firstborn of Desiree and Daniel Leopeng, was born on February 2, 2015. Her mother told Polokwane Observer that the family’s journey has been a testament to the power of faith, family and determination.
Desiree explained that Ofentse’s health problems began when she was just three years old.
Initially, her symptoms were mistaken for tonsillitis, but further medical examination revealed malnutrition caused by swelling in her legs and stomach.
“As Ofentse grew older, her condition worsened and she was later diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, a chronic kidney disease,” said Desiree.
The diagnosis forced the family to make major lifestyle changes, particularly to Ofentse’s diet and daily routine.
“It was a difficult adjustment, especially because she loved food and playing like any other child,” her mother said.
In June 2024, Ofentse’s condition deteriorated significantly and she was diagnosed with kidney failure.
During this time, Desiree learned how to administer dialysis at home while caring for her daughter through months of treatment.
Mother chooses to donate kidney
Despite the fear and uncertainty, the family remained hopeful and relied heavily on their faith. Desiree said the decision to donate one of her kidneys to her daughter became a turning point in Ofentse’s life.
Ofentse would like to thank her nephrologist, Dr Patience Sigwadi, who still treats and manages her condition, as well as Professor Maritza de Williers, who successfully performed the transplant surgery at Netcare Unitas Hospital in Centurion.
Inspired by her experience, Ofentse is currently writing a book titled ‘Ofentse’s Kidney Journey,’ with the support of her family, which will be published soon. The book aims to educate others about kidney disease and share her personal story of overcoming challenges.
“Her goal is to educate others about her journey and how she overcame the challenges she faced,” said Desiree.
“Be confident and never forget to pray”
Ofentse says the experience has taught her the importance of faith and confidence.
“You must always be confident and never forget to pray. I’m grateful to my mom for donating her kidney to me, and also to my dad for the support he gave during that time,” she said.
