Thendo Ramuhashi champions youth farming in Limpopo
Thendo Ramuhashi left nursing to start Uhone Farming in Limpopo, proving small-scale mixed farming can be profitable and socially impactful.
LIMPOPO – Getting to where she is now was not without challenges, but Thendo Ramuhashi’s journey involved humility and learning from those who came before her.
From nursing to farming: Uhone Farming launches in Limpopo
Ramuhashi quit her job as an oncology nurse and started her mixed farming venture, Uhone Farming, in 2023.
She is proving that small-scale mixed farming can be commercially viable, environmentally responsible and make a social impact.
She holds a diploma in nursing from Netcare Education College and is currently completing her final year in business administration.
“What motivates me is producing my own food, knowing where it comes from, while generating an income.
“As a young farmer, I focus on controlling diseases and staying updated with agricultural practices to ensure high-quality produce,” she said.
She added that from 2024, challenges such as poultry diseases and unpredictable weather tested her resilience.
“I address these by following strict biosecurity measures in our chicken coops and continuously learning new farming techniques,” Ramuhashi explained.
Overcoming challenges and empowering youth in agriculture
She described the journey as challenging and rewarding at the same time.
“Uhone Farming was born from the desire to contribute to food security and create job opportunities for young people in my community.
“I also wanted to challenge the notion that farming is outdated or unsuitable for youth. I currently have three full-time employees who care for our livestock and crops,” she said.
Reflecting on her experience, Ramuhashi said farming has taught her adaptability, creative problem-solving, and the importance of celebrating every small victory, from healthy seedlings to a successful harvest.
“There have been moments of great success and times that tested my patience, but each step has helped me grow and gain knowledge,” she said..
