Limpopo agri graduate sets sights on expanding poultry business
Phatutshedzo Nemaxwi, named top achiever at Madzivhandila College, plans to use his R17 000 award to grow his poultry business and create jobs.
LIMPOPO – A 25-year-old graduate from Mukula has set his sights on growing his poultry business after being named the overall best student at Madzivhandila College of Agriculture.
Phatutshedzo Nemaxwi graduated cum laude with a diploma in plant production during a ceremony held on March 20, where he was also recognised as the top student in his field and overall best achiever.
During his time at the college, Nemaxwi served as SRC president in 2024 and said his academic success was driven by discipline and determination.
“I spent many sleepless nights preparing for tests and exams and made sure I paid close attention during lectures. Prayer also kept me strong and focused throughout my studies,” he said.
Nemaxwi said his decision to study agriculture was inspired by food insecurity and unemployment in his community.
“I saw a gap in food production and wanted to be part of the solution. Agriculture gives young people the opportunity to become self-employed and build sustainable livelihoods.”
He was among 58 graduates who received diplomas in animal and plant production. For his achievements, Nemaxwi received a R17 000 award, which he plans to invest in expanding his poultry business.
“I started the poultry business because I did not have enough land for crop production. As it grows, I want to create employment opportunities for other young people and contribute to local economic development,” he said.
Addressing graduates, the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Nakedi Kekana encouraged them to apply their knowledge to uplift their communities.
“As you leave here, carry the name of Madzivhandila College with pride. Go back to your districts and use your skills to change lives,” she said.
Kekana added that graduates play a key role in advancing climate-smart agriculture, improving food security and promoting sustainable resource management.
She urged them to view themselves as entrepreneurs rather than job seekers.
“You are the professionals who will transform our fertile land into sustainable wealth,” she said.
The department has committed to supporting young graduates through farmer support programmes and youth-focused initiatives aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector.
