Polokwane potholes spark motorist fury as repairs fail

Polokwane motorists are demanding action as potholes worsen and 60km/h speed enforcement adds to their daily driving frustrations.

POLOKWANE – Motorists woke up last Friday morning to posters reflecting dissatisfaction about, among others, the potholes in the city’s streets that have made it close to impossible to navigate in some areas.

Motorists have their say

“The 60km/h restriction that the municipality now enforces as a source of income is exacerbating the situation,” a motorist said.

He explained that, according to his knowledge, a speed of under 60 km/h is likely to cause more damage than at a slightly higher speed.

“It is obvious that repairing potholes is not a priority for the municipality, and in most instances where attempts are made to repair potholes, the work is of such a standard that the holes are back after the next rain shower,” another motorist reckoned.

They added that, after repairs, contractors and municipal teams are eager to have jobs signed off and receive payment without even removing the rubble.

DA urges motorists to claim for damages

DA caucus leader in the municipality, Johan Retters reminded that motorists may claim from the municipality for damages sustained from potholes.

“Submit certified copies of the driver’s ID and driver’s licence as well as a copy of your municipal account and your vehicle’s licence disk, and the SAPS affidavit of the incident as well as three quotes for the repairs as well as photos of the pothole and the damage to pilotr@polokwane.gov.za,” Retters advised.

During last Thursday’s council meeting, the DA also insisted that the income from the speeding fines that are now enforced be utilised for road repairs.
