Veritas learner (16) publishes novel on unity and equality

Mahlogonolo Lekganyane, a 16-year-old from Veritas School, published her first novel, challenging division with the message that we all bleed the same colour.

POLOKWANE – In a world often divided by misinformation and stereotypes, a young local author is using her voice to promote unity.

Mahlogonolo Lekganyane (16), a learner at Veritas School, has published her first novel titled ‘We All Bleed the Same Colour’.

The book explores a dystopian world where people are segregated and treated unequally based on propaganda about the colour of their blood.

“The overall message is that everyone is the same despite the differences the world tries to group us into,” she said.

Lekganyane admitted that the journey to publication was not without challenges.

She found the editing process particularly difficult, describing herself as someone who tends to overthink her work.

“At times during the publishing process, there were moments when I wanted to give up. I didn’t know it was possible to publish a book at my age and thought it would cost a lot,” she said, adding that researching publishing platforms helped her navigate the process.

She used her free time to write, often choosing it over social activities. By creating a structured schedule, she managed to balance schoolwork, writing and her personal life.

The experience taught her valuable lessons about perseverance and self-belief. “I realised that I can achieve anything I set my mind to,” she said.

Lekganyane also challenged common stereotypes about young people.

“There is a belief that young people don’t take things seriously, but once you find your passion, you do. My message to others is not to overthink your work and to seek input from others. Just get your ideas down,” she said.

Maretha Swanepoel

My name is Maretha Swanepoel and I have worked at the Polokwane Review since 2012. The decision to become a journalist came at 04:00 one Friday morning while watching news of bombings in Afghanistan and I realised I wanted to be there. Some years later, I decided to rather stay in South Africa and join the industry due to my love for writing and curiosity. Even though I can write all beats, I love human interest and community news with some schools added to the mix. Telling someone’s story and using my camera to make memories is a privilege. My interests include animals (especially dogs) and mental health. I like to spend my time with my dogs and a good book. My family is important and takes second place in my heart. God is always first.
