Polokwane reading club founders on how to raise young readers
Vahluri Reading Club co-founders explain how to foster a love for reading in children through patience, encouragement, and making books fun.
POLOKWANE – Reading is an important part of our daily lives. Although it’s something that we do every day – from reading books, comments on social media or even instructions on product packaging – it forms an important part of our daily activities.
It is crucial to introduce the culture of reading to children, regardless of age. It can start with reading to a child and evolve into them reading for themselves.
Review spoke to Gapenyana Felicia Mphahlele and Bianca Ledwaba, co-founders of the Vahluri Reading Club, about the importance of reading.
As somebody who runs a successful reading club, she said that by introducing children to the joy of reading and fostering a love for literature, it lays the groundwork for them to explore a myriad of possibilities.

She added that developing a love for reading at an early age, especially during the foundation phase, is crucial in shaping a child’s future.
“These early years lay the foundation for language, comprehension and confidence. When a child learns to read with understanding, it becomes one of the greatest gifts we can give them. It allows them to think independently, express themselves clearly, and engage meaningfully with the world around them,” she said.
Creating a love for reading begins with making it enjoyable and safe for the child. Children become more confident when they are given opportunities to read out loud, express themselves, and engage with stories in a fun and relaxed environment.
It is also important for parents and caregivers to continue reading to children, even when they are able to read on their own. This not only strengthens bonding but also allows children to experience the joy and flow of storytelling.
“When children make mistakes while reading, correction should be done with patience and encouragement. Being too quick or harsh can create fear, while gentle guidance builds confidence and a willingness to try again. Creating an atmosphere where reading is fun and free from pressure helps children to participate without fear of making mistakes,” she added.
Bianca Ledwaba added that when children understand the instructions that they are given, they gain confidence to give their opinion, whether right or wrong.
She highlighted the importance of creating excitement around reading by telling stories and make it engaging.
“Ask questions and interact about what they have read. Also visit book shops with children to build up the excitement of having physical books,” she said.
Another key factor is ensuring that children read books that are appropriate for their level. When books are too difficult, children may feel discouraged, but when they are suitable and engaging, children are more likely to enjoy the experience and develop a lasting love for reading.
Ledwaba further urged parents to avoid the mistake of forcing children to read a book when they are struggling with it, it creates negative feelings for the child.
