Flora Park matric learners raise R6k with ‘anything but a bag’ day

Flora Park's matric learners raise R6 000 for a candlelight ceremony by ditching school bags for creative alternatives.

POLOKWANE – Flora Park Comprehensive High School (FCHS) hosted an ‘anything but a bag’ day on Friday, raising money for a planned candlelight ceremony ahead of the Gr final exams.

The initiative saw matric learners arrive at school carrying their books in creative alternatives to traditional school bags, adding a light-hearted atmosphere to the money-raising effort.

Teacher Salome Seko said the idea was part of a broader effort to make learning enjoyable while also meeting the practical goal of raising money.

The Gr 12 learners are part of the money-raiser.

She explained that the event was limited to Gr 12 learners to avoid disrupting normal school activities.

“As you can see, the mood is high and they are very happy. If it involved the entire school, it could have been disruptive. We chose the senior learners because they are disciplined and understand the purpose of the event.”

The event proved successful, with the school raising R6 000 towards the ceremony, a tradition held before the start of the matric examinations.

Encouraged by the outcome, the school is planning another event.

A vintage-themed day is scheduled for the second week of May, aimed at generating additional money for the ceremony.
