New bus shelters under construction at Polokwane’s Leeto station

Polokwane Municipality begins constructing bus stop shelters at the busy Leeto station as part of upgrading facilities for public transport users.

POLOKWANE – Commuters using the busy Leeto bus stop station in Polokwane will soon have relief from the sun and rain, as construction of new bus stop shelters is currently underway at the site.

Drivers and pedestrians passing the Leeto bus stops in the city will notice work in progress, with contractors on site as part of a municipal project to upgrade facilities for public transport users.

The station serves hundreds of residents daily who rely on buses and taxis to travel to work, school, and other parts of the city.

Polokwane Municipality spokesperson Thipa Selala confirmed to Polokwane Observer that the project is aimed at making the waiting experience safer and more comfortable for commuters.

“We’re creating bus stop shelters to protect commuters from the sun and especially for rainy days so that the commuters can wait for the bus in comfort,” Selala said.

The Leeto bus stop is one of several high-traffic nodes in the city where passengers often wait for extended periods with little to no cover.

He explained that Limpopo’s climate brings intense summer heat, sudden thunderstorms, which makes shaded waiting areas an important part of public transport infrastructure.

While the municipality has not yet confirmed the completion date the Leeto bus stop upgrade, the addition of bus stop shelters forms part of ongoing efforts to improve non-motorised and public transport facilities across Polokwane.

The shelters are expected to provide immediate relief to daily commuters, including school learners, pensioners, and workers who depend on public transport regardless of weather conditions.

Construction will continue over the coming weeks, with minimal disruption expected for commuters using the stop.

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
