Fuel levy relief extended into June

Government extends fuel levy relief, keeping R3 per litre off petrol while diesel levy essentially drops to zero from May 6 to June 2.

POLOKWANE – Motorists will receive another month of fuel levy relief after government confirmed that temporary tax reductions on petrol and diesel will remain in place into June.

The National Treasury announced that the current R3 per litre reduction in the general fuel levy on petrol will be extended until June 2, while diesel users will receive even greater relief from May 6.

Under the revised measures, diesel levy relief will increase by 93 cents per litre to R3.93, effectively reducing the levy on diesel to zero for the period between May 6 and June 2.

The extension comes as South Africans continue to face steep fuel price pressures linked to instability in global oil markets and ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In a statement released earlier today, Standing Committee on Appropriations chairperson Dr Mmusi Maimane welcomed the move, saying it would provide temporary relief to households, commuters and businesses already struggling with rising transport costs.

According to the latest fuel price data, petrol prices are expected to increase by between R1.76 and R2.08 per litre in May, while diesel could rise by about R4.50 per litre.

Without the levy intervention, diesel users could have faced increases of more than R8 per litre.
