Polokwane teen earns international chess spot
16-year-old Sobangane Masango qualifies to represent South Africa at an international chess tournament in Sri Lanka.
POLOKWANE – The 16-year-old Sobangane Masango, a Gr 11 learner at Meridian Northern Academy, is making his mark in the world of chess and is set to represent South Africa internationally.
Early passion for the game
Masango said he first discovered his passion for chess in Gr 7 and has been playing for about four to five years.
“Starting at that age gave me a good foundation and time to develop and sharpen my game over the years,” he said.
Building experience through tournaments
He told Review that he has competed in several tournaments, including the Limpopo Closed Chess Championships, Seshego New Year Open 2026 and the Machaba Open Chess Tournament.
Each competition, he said, has contributed to his growth as a player.
To date, he has secured clear first-place finishes in three tournaments.
Inspired by family
Masango credited his sisters for introducing him to the game.
“Watching them play and seeing their passion inspired me to learn. They were my earliest motivation,” he said.
Breakthrough at national level
His breakthrough came when he qualified at the South African Junior Closed Chess Championship, held at the end of March.
Competing in the u/18 section, he finished in the top 10 with six points out of a possible nine, earning him the opportunity to represent South Africa in Sri Lanka.
Gratitude for support
Masango expressed gratitude to everyone who supported his journey, including donors, his school and teachers.
“Without their kindness and support, travelling to Sri Lanka to represent my country would not have been within reach.
“I am deeply grateful for every contribution, big or small,” he said.
Eyes on Sri Lanka
He will travel to Sri Lanka accompanied by his teacher, Elias Mabotja. Masango said he is looking forward to the experience as he prepares to compete on the international stage and proudly represent South Africa.
