Vhembe karateka earns first dan black belt in Polokwane
A Duthuni karateka earned his first dan black belt in Polokwane, honouring his late mentor and showcasing discipline and dedication.
LIMPOPO – Dedication and discipline have paid off for Azwihangwisi Yeye Nematshetshete from Duthuni village outside Thohoyandou in Vhembe after he was awarded a first dan black belt at the Yin Yang Karate grading held at the Zurel Station Campus in Polokwane recently.
Strong performance at grading
The grading evaluates karatekas based on their knowledge and performance.
Nematshetshete, who trained at the Takalani Karate Centre in Thohoyandou, delivered a strong performance that earned praise for high standards and sportsmanship.
Honouring a late mentor
He said achieving the milestone also honoured his late mentor, sensei Takalani Target Mushavhanamadi.
“The competition was tough, but I managed to be conferred sensei. I learned a lot from my competitors, and it was not easy. The timing was right because I train every day, which kept me fit,” he said.
Inspired from a young age
Nematshetshete added that his passion for karate began at a young age, inspired by watching and imitating his late sensei.
He now hopes to continue progressing in the sport.
“My dream is to become a sensei. My late sensei Mushavhanamadi encouraged me never to quit,” he said.
Karate builds discipline and values
He believes karate instils discipline and strong values.
“If people join karate, they can become highly disciplined because it teaches morals and respect. It takes hard work and dedication to reach this level, and I am grateful to my family and fellow students for their support.”
More than just winning
Nematshetshete said karate develops physical, mental and spiritual strength, while also building courage and determination.
“Winning medals is a bonus. The most important thing is competing, learning and improving ourselves,” he said.
