Mother’s Day feature: Teacher Elsa van den Berg

Celebrating Mother’s Day with Elsa van den Berg as she reflects on motherhood, faith and nearly five decades in education.

POLOKWANE – For 47 years, Elsa van den Berg has dedicated her life to education, shaping young minds while also serving communities beyond the classroom.

Leadership at Eagle’s Nest Christian School

As deputy principal and co-vision leader at Eagle’s Nest Christian School, Van den Berg plays multiple roles, including mentor, trainer and community leader.

Her work extends to mentoring new, and student teachers, coordinating the Foundations for Farming Stewardship Centre, and leading training programmes focused on sustainable farming and responsible land stewardship.

She also oversees the school’s international outreach initiatives, which includes programmes in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and other countries.

Inspired by dedicated teachers

Van den Berg said her passion for education was inspired by teachers who impacted her own life.

“I have been in education for 47 years. My inspiration came from dedicated, faithful teachers who served their learners with love,” she said.

Motherhood and family life

Despite her extensive professional responsibilities, she describes motherhood as one of her greatest blessings.

“To be a mother is a gift from God. I am blessed to be a mother and grandmother,” she said.

Balancing faith, work and family

Balancing leadership in education with family life has not always been easy, she admitted, noting that faith plays a central role in helping her manage both.

“I rely on wisdom from God to help me balance being a mother and a teacher,” she said.

Time and support systems

Time remains one of her biggest challenges.

“One of my greatest challenges is reaching as many learners as possible while also having enough time with my loved ones. I am, however, grateful for the strong support system that has carried me throughout my years, my family,” she added.

A legacy of values

Van den Berg hopes her legacy will be reflected in the values she instils in both her learners and her family.

“I want my children and learners to be thankful, respectful to all people, and to love our Lord Jesus,” she said.
