PEMPS celebrates World Book, Earth Day with space theme

PEMPS celebrated World Book Day and Earth Day with a space-themed programme promoting curiosity and non-fiction reading.

POLOKWANE – PEMPS marked World Book Day and Earth Day last Friday with a combined programme designed to broaden learners’ understanding of both occasions.

Space theme sparks curiosity

Deputy principal Mabine Mametja said the school chose a space theme to spark curiosity and encourage learners to explore their surroundings.

“We watched videos of space landings and wanted to arouse curiosity in the children to explore what is in space. We also created a replica of a space suit so learners could see it first-hand,” he said.

Promoting non-fiction reading

World Book Day organiser Rina van der Merwe explained that learners were encouraged to dress in space-themed costumes while promoting non-fiction books.

The aim was to show that factual reading can be engaging and enjoyable.

“We wanted to create awareness around non-fiction books and show that they can also be interesting and fun to read,” she said.

Library visit and puppet show

As part of the activities, learners were taken to the school library to explore the resources available to them.

Learners in Gr 1-3, were treated to a puppet show focused on books, which was well received.
