7 face charges after brutal mob killing in Limpopo village

Seven people were arrested after a 25-year-old man was killed in a mob justice incident in Boshega village, Limpopo, following theft allegations.

POLOKWANE – Seven residents of Boshega village were arrested last week for their reported involvement in the killing of 25-year-old Simon Maime Sekele, who was accused of theft and set alight during a mob justice incident.

Simon Maime Sekele (25) dies after being assaulted during a mob justice incident.

Police said residents had identified Sekele as a suspect in the theft of municipal cables and other household items linked to housebreaking cases in the area.

Victim assaulted and set alight before dying in hospital

According to reports, residents confronted him after claiming to have found him in possession of suspected stolen goods.

He was assaulted and set alight before being taken to hospital in an unconscious state.

Sekele’s family from nearby Maripathekong later rushed him to Mankweng Hospital, where police were called at around 05:40 on April 26. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Malesela Ledwaba said the deceased was identified by his mother at the hospital before his death.

Court appearances as police continue investigation

Three of the suspects appeared before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Monday following their arrest on Thursday, while the remaining four are expected to appear soon.

Police indicated that there was no evidence linking Sekele to the alleged theft, as no stolen items were handed over to authorities by those who accused him.

Police condemn mob justice and urge rule of law

Provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe expressed concern over the incident, warning that mob justice undermines the rule of law.

“Residents are urged to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report criminal activities to the police so that due process can be followed,” she said.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact Sgt Harry Nchabeleng on 083 789 3752.
