Taxi driver granted bail after minibus fire killed 2 children
The taxi driver arrested after a minibus fire that killed two children in Masemola has been granted R6 000 bail by the Nebo Magistrate’s Court.
LIMPOPO – The 44-year-old taxi driver arrested in connection with a minibus taxi fire that claimed the lives of two children in Masemola appeared in the Nebo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (May 20).
Mogau Mosehla was granted bail of R6 000 and the matter was postponed to August 21.
The charges relate to an incident on May 13, at about 15:15 on the Apel Cross Road via the Tswaing gravel road towards Nkotwokwane Village in the Sekhukhune District.
According to police, a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi transporting about 22 schoolchildren aged between seven and 10 years caught fire while travelling on the gravel road.
Two children died in the fire, while seven others sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. Thirteen children escaped unharmed.
Police said the driver is facing two counts of culpable homicide, as well as charges linked to alleged contraventions of the National Road Traffic Act, including overloading and failure to produce an operating certificate.
The case continues and police investigations are ongoing.
