POLOKWANE – Northern Academy is celebrating a major achievement after its talented young performers were crowned winners of the 2026 National Youth Theatre Festival, placing both the school and Limpopo on the national stage.

One of the productions that captivated audiences was ‘The Tale of Bra Iddy’, written and directed by Sussies Mjwara. The production showcased the learners’ acting, storytelling and stage presence, while delivering a powerful message.

A story that resonates

The play follows the journey of Bra Iddy, a character whose life reflects the realities faced by many South Africans. Through humour, emotion and dramatic moments, the story explores themes of leadership, responsibility, community and the consequences of the choices people make. Every scene demonstrated the cast’s ability to connect with the audience and bring the characters to life.

The learners impressed with their confidence, teamwork and professionalism on stage. Their performances, supported by creative stage design, costumes and technical production, highlighted the hard work that had gone into months of rehearsals.

‘I am still shocked’

Lesego Modiba, who played the role of Kobus, said being recognised for the production was a memorable moment.

“Being nominated and winning an award was a testament to how big and powerful the story is, and I am still shocked,” he said.

The cast was praised for its dedication and commitment, with their willingness to learn and step outside their comfort zones contributing to the production’s success. The play is a reminder that young people have powerful stories to tell and that theatre remains an important platform for inspiring conversations and showcasing talent.

No easy task

Mukhethwa Masakona, who played Bra Iddy, said the role was challenging but rewarding.

“It was not an easy task, but through the support of the cast members and the crew as a whole it became easier, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity,” he said.

Northern Academy’s success at the National Youth Theatre Festival is a proud moment for the school and the province.
