POLOKWANE – Flora Park Comprehensive High School principal Joseph Ntsiene Masekela has been named the provincial winner in the Secondary School Leadership category at the National Teaching Awards.

Masekela described the recognition as a great honour and a reflection of the collective efforts of the entire Flora Park Comprehensive High School family.

He said the award serves as motivation to continue serving with dedication, humility and commitment. It also demonstrates what can be achieved when the principal, school management team, teachers, school governing body, parents, learners and stakeholders work together towards a shared vision of excellence.

Leadership built on integrity and teamwork

Masekela said the foundation of his leadership is built on integrity, accountability, teamwork and visibility, while placing learners at the centre of everything the school does.

He believes in leading by example, supporting teachers, encouraging innovation and creating a culture in which everyone understands their role in achieving the school’s goals.

Strategies for success

“Among the strategies that have driven the school’s success are strong curriculum monitoring, learner support programmes, effective discipline management, active stakeholder involvement and a focus on continuous improvement in teaching and learning,” he said.

Overcoming challenges

Masekela acknowledged that one of the biggest challenges has been maintaining high levels of performance while dealing with various pressures affecting teaching and learning.

He said these challenges were overcome through teamwork, open communication, consistent monitoring and providing the necessary support to teachers and learners. The school has remained focused on the belief that every learner matters, every lesson matters and every mark counts.

Creating a culture of learning and discipline

He said his leadership has focused on creating an environment where teaching and learning are prioritised through regular monitoring, professional support for teachers, intervention programmes and collaboration with parents.

This approach, he said, has also strengthened discipline by promoting respect, responsibility and accountability among learners.

A vision for the future

Masekela said he hoped to see education in Limpopo and the country at large produce confident, skilled and successful young people who can contribute to society.

“Through strong leadership and collaboration, a better future for learners can be built,” he concluded.
