LIMPOPO – A 16-year-old learner was injured during a confrontation between police and a group of learners at a high school in Nakampe Village on Tuesday, September 1.

The incident began when police were called to the school following reports of threats allegedly made by a 21-year-old learner.

According to police, officers were asked by a teacher to escort the learner home so that his parents could be contacted. After the learner completed an examination, officers approached him, but he allegedly resisted and pushed one of the officers.

A second officer intervened, after which a group of learners allegedly emerged from classrooms and began throwing stones and plastic bottles at the police.

Warning shot fired

Police said the situation became volatile and one officer fired a warning shot into the ground in an attempt to disperse the crowd. The officers subsequently left the school.

Shortly afterwards, police were informed that a 16-year-old learner had sustained an injury to his left leg during the incident. He was taken to a local clinic before being referred to hospital for further treatment.

IPID investigating

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the learner’s injury.

Two cases have been opened: assault on police and attempted murder. The circumstances surrounding the attempted murder charge are part of the ongoing IPID investigation.

Police commissioner appeals for calm

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers urged learners and community members to remain calm and refrain from violence.

“Police officers have a duty and responsibility to respond to any complaints and to maintain safety within the communities, including schools. Any concerns regarding police conduct must be reported through the appropriate channels and should never result in violence. At the same time, circumstances surrounding this incident must be thoroughly investigated,” said Scheepers.

The investigation is continuing.
