N1 North reopens after fatal collision near Polokwane
According to the department, a Volkswagen Polo collided head-on with a truck carrying steel pipes on the N1 North, with the road closed for hours while emergency teams worked the scene.
POLOKWANE – The N1 North near Mekete Lodge, approximately 15km from Polokwane, has reopened to traffic following a fatal collision this morning, the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed.

Road closed for hours after collision
The department first alerted motorists to the closure after a motor vehicle collision closed the route, with traffic brought to a standstill in the affected area.
Law enforcement officials and emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene, and motorists were urged to use the R81 or R521 as alternative routes while the road remained closed.
Overtaking vehicle collided head-on with truck
The department has since confirmed that the crash involved a Volkswagen Polo, which was overtaking, and collided head-on with a loaded truck transporting steel pipes.
The male driver of the Polo died at the scene.
No injuries were reported from the truck.
Department extends condolences
The department extended its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, and thanked motorists for their patience and cooperation while the road was temporarily closed to allow emergency and law enforcement teams to attend to the scene and conduct the necessary processes.
It also acknowledged the work of all stakeholders, including law enforcement officials and emergency response teams, for their efforts in managing the situation.
Motorists are urged to remain cautious and vigilant, obey the rules of the road, and exercise patience while travelling.
