KAIZER Chiefs defender, Tefu Mashamaite’s brace along with striker, Knowledge Musona’s goal were responsible for Polokwane City FC getting knocked out of the Telkom Knockout Competition.
The two teams played at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Saturday evening, where Chiefs beat City FC 3-0.
Amakhosi were dominating from the onset of the match and their midfielder, Reneilwe Letsholonyane could have found the back of the net in the third minute hadn’t City FC goalkeeper, Nkueni Mayela saved his shot.
City FC began to organise themselves and play as a team. They had a few opportunities but Chiefs goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, was not threatened as their volleys went over the goalposts.
Rise and Shine striker, Thabo Rakhale, had a chance in the 15th minute, but Khune flicked his shot over the goalpost.
Chiefs scored the opening goal in the 33rd minute through Mashamaite’s powerfull header after a corner kick. The goal left Mayela shouting at defender Maxwell Molala for his slowness to clear the ball. The score was 1-0 when referee blew the half-time whistle.
In the second half, Bernard Parker had a shot from outside the box in the 50th minute, but the ball took a deflection off a defender and easily sailed into Mayela’s hands.
City FC had a chance in the 58th minute, but Sphesilhle Nzimande’s shot was deflected by Morgan Gould and his follow-up shot was saved by Khune.
In the 66th minute, Letsholonyane missed another clear sitter and that made coach Stewart Baxter angry.
Mashamaite scored Chiefs’ second goal after a corner kick taken by Parker in the 67th minute. Amakhosi striker, Musona, made it 3-0 in the 74th minute, after he beat the off-side trap with a run and lobbed the ball over an advancing Mayela.
