POLOKWANE City FC beat Mamelodi Sundowns 1- 0 in their Premier Soccer League (PSL) match at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Saturday evening.
The goal that clinched City FC’s victory was an own goal by Sundowns defender, Tebogo Langerman in the first half.
Sundowns were over-confident during the match, having beat AmaZulu 7-1 recently. Playing against City FC, Sundowns played attacking football.
In the 13th minute, Sundowns’ winger, Khama Billiat received a chance to score, but his shot went wide by an inch after it was flicked by City FC goalkeeper, Modiri Marumo, who was on high form.
Five minutes later, Bongani Zungu also had a chance to score, but released a disappointing shot that was easily caught by Marumo.
City FC, strikers Sphesihle Mzimande and Thabo Rakhale put pressure on Sundowns defenders and found the back of the net in the 43rd minute when Galagbwe Moyana’s square pass into the box confused Langerman, who unfortunately turned into his own net.
Sundowns did eveything to find an equaliser in the second half, but were denied by Thapelo Tshilo and Tlou Molekwane who were solid at the back.
City FC defended their only goal until the referee blew the end whistle. They are now in 13th position on the PSL log with seven points.
City FC head coach, Bobbie Solomons said the players played closed football as he knew Sundowns’ pattern.
City FC will play against AmaZulu FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday, November 6.
