Blue Rocks’ Mopani win

AFTER winning Mopani preliminary round to becoming one of the final 32 teams in the Nedbank Cup tournament, Blue Rocks FC is now halfway to the finals of the Nedbank Cup

AFTER winning the Mopani preliminary round to become one of the final 32 teams in the Nedbank Cup tournament, Blue Rocks FC is now halfway to the finals of the Nedbank Cup, where the team will have the opportunity to rub shoulders with PSL teams.

Blue Rocks beat Giyani Hot Spurs 1-0 and Winners Park 3-2 on Saturday at the Giyani Stadium. They will now represent the Mopani district in the next Nedbank Cup games.

The Mopani team will play against the winning teams from other Limpopo districts to find out who would represent the province in the final stages of the tournament.

The teams that competed in Giyani on Saturday were all from the Safa second division league, formerly known as the Vodacom league.

After a convincing 5-0 win against Dynamos, Winners Park was the firm favourite to win the Mopani district honours. Although Winners Park started out strong against Blue Rocks, they soon faded and looked tired.

Blue Rocks used this lacklustre performance to their advantage and walked away with the laurels.

Winners Park coach, Willy Moloto, said his team had the game in their control, but made too many mistakes. He said they played well and that Blue Rocks were lucky to have beaten them.

“If you look at the game you’d realise that some of the goals that they scored were not actually goals that one would say they worked for. They capitalised from our mistakes,” he said.

“We now need to go back to the drawing board before the start of the league season,” he said.
