JURIE Meyer Snr and his 21- year old son, Jurie Jnr have collected a few national quad racing championships titles in the past, but this year is special as they both clinched national off-road championships titles.
Jurie Jnr defended his title as overall winner of the 2012 Off-road Quad Championships and again won the Q1 Class Championships, while his father claimed the 2013 Master Class Champions title.
It has been a successful season for the two Meyers, who led their respective class championships from the opening race outside Bela-Bela earlier this year.
Both won their classes, while the younger Meyer won the race overall. He then went on to win two more events this season, including the Mantshwabisi 1000 Desert Race (round four of seven) in Botswana, while he finished on the podium after two more events.
He however faced a tough battle at the final event outside Ventersdorp as he experienced rare mechanical problems that cost him valuable time and positions.
The defending champion still managed to finish fourth overall and third in the Q1 Class after the race to ensure his titles for the year.
Jurie Snr had more luck on his side. His accumulated points were enough for him to ensure his third Master Class Championships title after round six. He also won his class in Botswana after a 250km two-day race in the hot Kalahari Desert. After winning the Master Class at the penultimate round and with the title secured, he decided not to compete in the final event and focussed on young Jurie’s onslaught by rendering much needed assistance in the pits.
Quad racing in South Africa is still a relatively young sport and the achievements of the Meyer father and son combination are remarkable. They won seven national championship titles between them in six years.
The Meyers received their national championships awards at a gala dinner hosted by Motorsport South Africa in Midrand on Thursday.
