POLOKWANE’S Sunshine Tour pro-golfer, CJ du Plessis lost out on first place during the IGT Q-School warm-up tournament, which was held at Boksburg’s East Rand Property Mines Golf Club. The tournament ended last Thursday.
Du Plessis looked threatening, especially after the second round, where he shared the lead with Tyrone Ryan. In the third round, the Limpopo-based player took the lead one shot ahead of Ryan.
He started the final round well and achieved an eagle-three at the fourth hole.
Subsequently, this is where his luck with his putter also ended and he struggled with his putting for the next 10 holes. To further rub salt to injury, the Polokwane Golf Club player collected a bogey and suffered a double combination at the 15th and 16th holes, which ended his challenge. Du Plessis scored a dismal 73 in the final round, sharing second place with Callum Mowat.
Du Plessis made a 67 in the first round, 67 strokes in the second, 66 in the third and a final 73 strokes.
Eventual leader Ryan had an even more dismal final round and ended in fourth place on 275. The winner, Rhys West came from behind in the last round, five shots of the pace of eventual leader Du Plessis. West collected eight birdies to finish with an eight under par 65 to win with a 18 under par 270, three strokes ahead of his closest rivals Du Plessis and Mowat.
