POLOKWANE – Soccer fans from all over the province flocked to the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex to support their teams and the atmosphere during the game was electric with tension as supporters encouraged their teams.
An early goal in the second minute of the game between Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Gabon by defender, Erwin Nguéma secured a win for Gabon in the Group D African Nations Championships (Chan) at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Saturday.
This was the only goal scored during the game, which ended in a score of 1-0.
Nguéma’s goal gave the Gabon team an edge that seemed to continue throughout the game, giving them a well-deserved four points and leaving DRC with three points.
Attack after attack was made on Gabon goalkeeper, Ndombe Mumbele by Emomo Eddy Ngoyi and Eric Nkulukuta, but DRC only came close to pushing the score to a 1-1 draw once. However, they could not follow through.
No fewer than four players left the field with minor injuries, but returned to finish the game. Nguéma was selected as the man of the match.
One of the supporters, Micheal Nkomo said it was a special day for him as he was able to spend his 40th birthday next to the soccer field. “My father used to take me to soccer games when I was still young and now I am able to take my children to these games, where they can see world-class stars in action,” he said.
