With Mauritania and Burundi packing their bags in the group stages of the tournament, the hope rested on the shoulders of Gabon and the Democratic Republic of Congo, but there was no semi-final berth for the two nations.
The Panthers of Gabon needed a goal from a penalty spot to cancel Libya’s opener, but the central African country was found wanting during the penalty shoot-out, losing 4-2.
Congo, the winners of the inaugural Chan in Ivory Coast in 2009 could not find the form which saw them lift the trophy in 2009.
The Leopards were given their marching orders by tournament favourites, Ghana, who needed a second half penalty to book a semi-final date with Nigeria.
Zimbabwe, who are the only Southern African country in the semi-final will play against Libya in the Free State tonight (Wednesday), starting at 17:00, followed by Ghana vs Nigeria at 20:00.
The Peter Mokaba Sports Complex hosted its last match of the tournament on Sunday evening, where Libya beat Gabon 4-2 on penalties.
