POLOKWANE – Athletes and officials are gearing themselves for the annual Modern Autohaus BMW Polokwane 4-in-1 marathon, which will take place on Saturday.
Members of the Polokwane Athletic Club, which is the host club to the marathon are ready to either participate in the marathon or to assist in various ways on the day. The total prize money for this year’s Modern Autohaus BMW Polokwane 4-in-1 marathon is a staggering R18 000.
The main race, which is a 42km marathon, will serve as a qualifying race for the Comrades Ultra Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon later this year.
The other race distances athletes can compete in are 5 km, 10 km, and 21 km races. All walkers are welcome to participate in the three shorter races. Last year some 1 100 athletes took part in this marathon and the organisers are expecting even more this year.
The B and C rugby fields of the Peter Mokaba Stadium will serve as the starting and finishing points for the marathon. Participants in the 21 km and 42 km marathons will start their races at 06:30 and the 5 km and 10 km races will begin at 06:45. All athletes who complete their races will receive medals.
The first 150 contestants over the finish line in the 42 km race will each receive a BMW branded T-shirt.
Entry times, fees and event information:
• Friday, February 21 from 17:00 to 19:00 at the race venue.
• Saturday, February 22 from 05:00 until 10 minutes before start of the first race.
• Provincial road race licences are required for the 10 km, 21 km and 42 km races.
• Temporary road race licences cost R25.
• 42 km marathon entry fee – R80.
• 21 km race entry fee – R60.
• 10 km race entry fee – R40.
• 5 km fun run entry fee – R25.
• Runners over 70 years can enter free of charge, provided they belong to an affiliated club.
Identity books must be produced for free race entries and numbers.
