POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Aikido Club, which opened in March last year under the guidance of dojo head, Rudi Delport has since grown in number.

This weekend, the club hosted a first for the city – a a seminar on this lesser known discipline of martial arts, with national sensei and chief instructor of Aikido South Africa from the Western Province, Elroy Goliath as the main speaker.

Goliath, who established this fighting sport in South Africa in 2009 and who was instrumental in establishing the Polokwane club. He is also the chief instructor of Aikido South Africa.

Goliath demonstrated what Aikido, a Japanese form of martial arts, entailed.

According to Delport, Aikido participants from various parts of South Africa attended the seminar. Unlike other forms of martial arts, Aikido participants did not compete in competitions, but the students were formally tested on different levels during grading examinations.
