Arm-wrestler in need of a hand

POLOKWANE – Martin van Wyk of Lynx Arm-Wrestling Club will fly the South African flag high during an international arm-wrestling tournament, which will be held in Lithuania in Europe in September.
Van Wyk qualified for the international tournament when he participated in the South African National Championships, which were held in Witbank on March 29, where he came first in the under 90kg left and right senior men’s category.
According to Liana Fourie, Lynx Arm-Wrestling Club secretary, Van Wyk faced a tough opponent during the championships, but in the end, he was the one with more determination and practise, which won him the matches.
“With that, he qualified for the senior men under 90kg category at the international tournament. The club is proud to of him and believes he will make us proud and return with a medal,” says Fourie.
She says Van Wyk has passion and love for arm-wrestling and this might be the reason he excels in the sport.
Van Wyk says he started competing in arm-wrestling in 2010.
“I joined the sport as it is a favourite among the people I hang out with. My friends use the sport to prove that they are strong,” he says.
Van Wyk has received 16 medals and four trophies so far, and says he still needs to win more.
He seeks sponsorship to be able to compete in the tournament in Europe.
“The trip needs a lot of money and I am asking for assistance. I need at least R30 000 for the flight, accommodation and other expenses,” he says.
He encourages young people to join arm-wrestling as it teaches discipline and respect.
