Rufus Photo took first place in the 42,2 km men's open category of the very first Aida Lowveld Tuffy 4-in-1 road race, which took place near Tzaneen on Saturday.

POLOKWANE – Rufus Photo took first place in the 42,2 km men’s open category of the very first Aida Lowveld Tuffy 4-in-1 road race, which took place near Tzaneen on Saturday.

The aptly named Tuffy is a demanding circular route that takes runners up Agatha Road past the Coach House.

The marathon is considered to be a good training run for the Comrades Marathon and runners could compete in either the 42,2 km marathon, 21,1 km half-marathon, 10 km or 5 km races.

Photo, who is a member of the Pietersburg Road Runners crossed the finish line in a time of 02:36.

Mientjie Els from the Tzaneen Marathon Club took the gold medal in the 42,2 km women’s category. Els completed her race in a time of 04:12:45.

Pearl Hughes of Polokwane was the third woman over the finish line. Hughes completed her race in a time of 04:32:38.

Phuti Mohale of Pietersburg Road Runners won first place in the men’s 21,1 km half-marathon and finished the run in a time of 01:14:39.

Tebogo Pilusa of Polokwane took second place in the half marathon, finishing the race in a time of 01:16:54.

Martin Potgieter won the gold medal in the half-marathon master men’s category, crossing the finish line in a time of 02:11:24.

According to the organiser of the Aida Lowveld Tuffy 4-in-1 road race, Johan Thiart, 450 runners braved the mist and rain to take on the first Tuffy race.
