Cyclists tackle fun XCO cycle course

Close to 80 cyclists took on the KFC Add Hope XCO Mountain Bike Race on Sunday morning.

POLOKWANE – Close to 80 cyclists took on the KFC Add Hope XCO Mountain Bike Race on Sunday morning.

The race format was similar to that of the Olympics’ mountain bike races.

The cyclists had to complete several laps of the 6,4km XCO course on the municipal land bordering Thornhill Estate and the Ster Park residential area.

Bernard Bronkhorst and Komborero Bere completed their fastest laps in less than 17 minutes. They were the only two senior cyclists to do so.

Bronkhorst took first place in the men’s elite category, completing five laps in 1:24:27.

His fastest lap time was 16:35. Bere took his spot on the top step of the podium in the junior men’s category.

His fastest lap time was 16:34 and he completed five laps in 1:28:58.

Cherie Siebert took first place in the women’s elite category, completing five laps in 1:34:29. Her fastest lap time was 22:41.

Elbie Lourens took first place in the master women’s category and crossed the finish line only 30 seconds after Siebert. Lourens clocked a fastest lap time of 23:30 and completed five laps in 1:35:04.

The cyclists pedalled their hearts out as the race served as one of the Limpopo qualifiers for the Limpopo mountain bike team. The selected team will compete in the nationals later this year.
