Oval track’s winter trophy race a hit

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane oval track made for some exciting and thrilling action on Saturday for the winter trophy race of 2014.

The racing started with the rookie class showing off their stuff. Elzanie Raaths took first place, followed by Dylan Bosch in second and Johnny Durant in third place.

The stockrods class took to the track with one of the old hands in the class, Dirk Badenhorst returning to the track. The results at the end of the evening showed Willie Blignaut in first place, Gideon van Breda in second place and Nico Grebe in third place.

The 1660 modified was another hotly contested class, with Fred Cooper visiting from Bosveld Oval, and returning from a long break from racing.

The races made for some nailbiting action and a few close calls, but ended in Johan Hatting taking first place, while Cooper took second place and Pieter Lourens took the third place.

The 2.1 modifieds saw only one of the promised Pintos entering the race. Piet Venter entered in his Tigra, but met the side wall because of a throttle jam after leading the first race and was out for the count. But he did not disappoint the fans and walked away from the accident. He was later taken to hospital, and was told to return on Monday for a MRI scan, but is fine and looking forward to the next race. The race ended with Desmond Bosch in first place and Chantelle Lewis and Roelof van Breda taking second and third places respectively.

The hotrod race saw only two cars take part, with Stephan Weideman in first place and Andre Pienaar in second place.

The super saloons class was the best supported race of the evening and saw Johan Alberts dominating the evening and taking first place, followed by Kobus du Toit in second place and Tinus Smith in third place.
