POLOKWANE – It was a case of separating the men from the boys when the South African strongman competition took place in the city on Saturday and Sunday.
The competition was held at Mall of the North, with South African gladiator, Garth Collins, popularly known as Granite, as announcer for the day.
From lifting a 140kg log and holding it above your head for a few se-conds to walking with steel bars and weights of up to 325kg, the tasks proved difficult for even the strongest participants.
For fun, some of the audience members showed their strength and attempted to carry two suitcases weighing 165kg each.
Some of the tough challenges the strongmen had to contend with included the 400kg yolkwalk, overhead medley and 400kg tyre flip, with Ettiene Smit from Pretoria walking away with the title for the ninth time.
SA Strongman results:
1. Ettiene Smit with a total of 46 points after winning eight events.
2. Sholto Luiters with 32 points after winning one event.
3. Kelin Mills 28 points after he won one event
4. Frikkie Page with 23 points.
5. Stefan Smit with 21 points.
